JAMES GOYET | BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU BLACK BELT

James Goyet currently serves as an Air Force Special Warfare (SW) Field Developer, responsible for preparing the next generation of warfighters. He focuses on enhancing their land and water fitness, building critical skills, and developing mental toughness through mentorship and coaching to equip them for the rigors of their SW pipelines.

James retired from active duty after 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant (MSgt) as a SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) Specialist. Throughout his career, he completed the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP) Level 3 and the Special Operations Combatives Program (SOCP), teaching combatives to high-risk-of-capture military personnel.

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Rivaldo Araujo Jr. in San Antonio, TX, James and his entire family are active practitioners of the sport. He has a deep passion for teaching and has witnessed firsthand the positive impact Jiu-Jitsu can have on individuals' lives.

While living in San Antonio, James developed and led an anti-abduction training course for the local community following a series of attempted abductions targeting young girls. His program taught essential striking and grappling skills, techniques for escaping restraints such as duct tape, zip ties, and handcuffs, as well as defensive tactics in confined spaces like vehicles and car trunks. Emphasizing situational awareness and threat prevention, the training made a tangible difference. Just two months after the program’s launch, a nine-year-old participant successfully identified and evaded an abduction attempt, applying the skills and awareness James had instilled in her.

James continues to dedicate himself to developing resilient individuals, both within the military and the broader community, through mentorship, training, and empowerment. He believes that resilience, awareness, and preparedness are essential life skills for every individual.

John Haskell

John grew up as a wrestler, training under several world-class coaches who have since been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a cowboy and rancher across the western United States, he has maintained a lifelong commitment to high-performance fitness and practical self-defense, consistently seeking out the highest caliber of coaching.

His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey was significantly shaped by the mentorship of Professor Goyet, whose practical approach, direct teaching style, and emphasis on drilling accelerated John’s development. Now a blue belt, John is passionate about advancing his skills, deepening his understanding of the art, and sharing elite-level instruction with others.

Motivated by a shared vision with his wife, Brittany, John’s pursuit of BJJ is rooted in a desire to equip their three children with the knowledge, skills, fitness, and courage to protect themselves — and to always stand up for what is right. This commitment to family and excellence ultimately led John to co-found Bighorn BJJ, where dedication to high-quality instruction and personal growth are core values.
